Every night before bed, my husband asks me: “what was your favorite part of today?”
Okay, maybe not ever night. But most nights. And if he doesn’t ask me, I ask him. It’s a simple way to end the day on a positive note; to reflect on what good happened, when the natural tendency is to rework and mull over all the things that didn’t go so well.
When I first started this gratitude prompt series, it was because of this very question. It’s so simple — you’d think a question like that couldn’t make any difference at all. But simple does not mean unimportant. Not only is this question an easy way to practice more gratitude, it’s also become, in and of itself, one of my favorite parts of the day.
What was your favorite part of today?
At the end of the day, ask yourself this question. Make it a habit. Especially if the day didn’t go as planned, challenge yourself to look for good. What did go well? Where was there opportunity for growth? Say it out loud or write it down before going to sleep. (And if you have a partner, make it a team exercise. Asking one another and sharing your answers doubles as a way to deepen your relationship.)
WHAT I WROTE:
My favorite part of today was… building a fire in our fireplace. A few days ago Mark trimmed back the lilacs, and now we use the sticks as kindling. As we sit and enjoy the crackling flames, I realize how those lilacs bring us so much joy when they bloom… now they are bringing us joy in a new way. I’m grateful to have a house with lilacs, and a fireplace, and to sit and enjoy both with my best friend.
